About Connecticut’s Charter Schools

• Nearly 11,000 students attended 21 public charter schools in Connecticut in 2024-25 (total number of schools now 23).
• Ninety-two percent (92%) of students attending charter schools are students of color.
• Sixty-nine percent (69%) of Connecticut’s charter school students come from low-income households.

About SBAC Testing

The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) is a standardized test that measures academic performance in grades 3–8 in English language arts, math, and science. The SBAC is an online test that’s aligned with the Connecticut Core Standards and is intended to help teachers and parents understand how students are progressing towards their learning goals.

The following information is based on the charter schools that received 2023-24 SBAC data and does not include our state’s two public charter high schools. In addition, it is important to note that to protect student privacy, the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) suppresses data if it is based on very small sample sizes. Learn more about CSDE data suppression.

Key SY 2024-25 SBAC Findings

• Percentage of schools who outperformed the districts that serve the same population of students, in terms of the percent of students meeting or exceeding proficiency requirements for their grade level:
  • 100% (19 out of 19) of  charters outperformed the host district in ELA
  • 84.2% (16 out of 19) of charters outperformed the host district in Math

Public Charter School Performance Relative to the Host District and State

• 4 charters outperformed the state average in ELA
  • Integrated Day Charter School, Odyssey Community School, Side by Side Charter School, Stamford Charter School for Excellence 
• 3 charters that outperformed the state average in Math
  • Odyssey Community School, Side by Side Charter School, Stamford Charter School for Excellence
• 3 charters outperformed the host district and the state average in both ELA and Math.
